The competition begins on January 5th and ends on March 4th. You have exactly 8 weeks to lose 8 percent of your total body weight OR reach your individual health and wellness goals, beginning on your initial consultation date.
You do not have to be a 50/50 Fitness member to participate.
Individual consultations for everyone will take place in our 50/50 Fitness studio from Saturday, January 5th through Monday, January 7th, with one of our certified health and fitness professionals. The 30 minute initial consultation consists of:
· Starting Weight, Measurements, and BodyFat percentage.

· Goal setting session – set small, reasonable goals as stepping stones.
· The beginning of a fitness plan/workout routine.
· Discussing the use of an electronic food journal.

The entry fee for the 8-week program is $200.

This year, we are bringing back our cash prize! $50 of your registration fee is withheld and placed into a cash pool. We have a limited number of spots available (50). The grand prize is $2500, to be divided up by all successful participants. There are two ways to win:

1.) The Fast Track:

Everyone who has lost 8% of their total body weight (1%/week) at their final consultation, will automatically be named a prize pool winner.
To calculate:
Take your body weight and multiply it by .08.
Sample Calculations:
For a 150 lb person…150 x .08 = 12 lbs of total weight loss in 8 weeks.
For a 200 lb person…200 x .08 = 16 lbs of total weight loss in 8 weeks.

2.) The Participation Award:

Every Sunday, you will receive a weekly email with a fun fitness challenge, nutritional guidance, healthy recipes and information on how to log your foods electronically. Your coaches will keep tabs on your progress and participation. By completing 3 of the following 5 tasks and staying on track with your individual health and wellness goals, you will be named a prize pool winner.
Task #1: Join our private social media support group, via Facebook. You will receive an invite during the first week of the challenge. Post a minimum of 1x/week, offering encouragement, sharing recipes, or talking about some of the obstacles you are facing. Past participants shared step counts, posted workouts, and met up for other fun activities outside of the group. Emily will be monitoring the group, answering questions, and posting articles.
Task #2: In each newsletter, there will be a fun challenge for you to complete. Each week, you’ll submit proof of yourself engaging in the activity to Brittany, who will keep track of the results. You need to finish and submit 6 of the 8 challenges to complete this task.
Task #3: Jamie has created 3 short videos that are fitness and nutrition related. In each video there is an assignment that you’ll submit back to him. You must complete all three video assignments to check off this box!
Task #4: Complete an electronic food journal on Myfitnesspal. Log your foods for a minimum of 5 days per week for the duration of the challenge. Justin will be on Myfitnesspal checking journal entries and looking for frequent users.
Task #5: There will be a series of health related trivia questions released towards the end of the competition, by Mike. Locate and submit the answers to the questions to receive credit for this task.

Next Steps:

At the end of the 8 weeks, you’ll come in for your final measurements. Your coach will provide you your scorecard and talk about your successes and future fitness goals. This program is an accountability based program designed to keep you engaged in the New Year, well into the New Year.
We have just 50 spots available this year! Each coach will take on 10 participants. Sign-up now and make your commitment to health and wellness in 2019!

It’s really simple, but works like magic

This post is for those who are completely fed up with trying to hit a goal that seems unreachable…

You’re probably thinking: What’s the deal? Why won’t the weight come off? Or why can’t I seem to get stronger and more fit when I am putting in all of this effort? You are doing everything you can think of to make it happen…

There’s one simple thing standing between you and all that you strive for. One. Simple. Thing.

And here it is…You eat too many calories. OR, you don’t eat them at the right time, in the right proportion, based on your activity level.

That’s it.

Wait, don’t give me the excuse that, “I only eat healthy calories.” That’s great, but even healthy calories add up to extra pounds when we let them go unchecked. And all of us have our own ideas about what it means to eat healthfully.

Back to Basics: Why Calorie Counting Works

You may have heard about the professor from Kansas State University, Mark Haub, who performed a famous junk food diet. Professor Haub proved a powerful lesson for anyone who still has weight to lose, so let’s listen up.

In a demonstrative experiment for his nutrition class, Professor Haub ate a diet of pure junk food for 2 months. I’m talking candy bars and packaged snacks – the kinds of things you find in a snack machine.

You’d expect him to gain weight, right? Well, there was one catch. He was only allowed to eat 1800 calories each day. Yes, those calories were pure junk, but the limit was firmly put at 1800 calories.

Before the experiment, Professor Haub’s typical calorie intake was closer to 2600 calories. So his junk food diet put him at an 800 calorie per day deficit.

Boy did that calorie deficit pay off. Within 2 months he had dropped 30 pounds, bringing his BMI from overweight down to normal.

No, we’re NOT recommending a junk food diet as your answer for everything. What we are pointing out is how powerful a reduction in calories is when it comes to redefining old patterns.

Do you know how many calories you eat each day? And how much each seemingly small slip up can put you out?

If you’re not sure, don’t worry. You’re about to learn the one tool that will change everything! First we need to get to the bottom of how many calories you’re eating each day.

Yes, even those healthy calories.

Before you start whining, let me explain. Food journaling doesn’t involved lugging around a journal, writing down each food item throughout the day then looking everything up at the end of the day to manually tally calories like it used to.

These days food journaling has gone digital, and tracking your calories only takes seconds of your time.

Here’s what I need you to do:

#1: Download a food journal application to your smart phone. At the touch of your fingers you’ll be able to look up food items and instantly see your running calorie tally. Many of these programs also sync with your activity trackers as well, and automatically adjust according to how much exercise you do on a daily basis.

Our Recommendation: MyFitnessPal
If you’re interested in getting started, follow this prompt, and one of our Health & Fitness Specialists can work to educate you on what sort of things to look for, how to use the app to it’s full capacity, and how to make meaningful changes, over time.

#2: Meet with your doctor to make sure all of your levels are in check (or just to establish a baseline), and to ensure that you’re ready to initiate a change. Eat healthy, fresh foods and when you decide to indulge, make sure to do so within your target calorie and nutrient ranges.

#3: Meet with us for a consistent and challenging exercise routine that’s in sync with your new eating plan.

These three, simple steps will give you structure and clarity that you need when it comes to making food choices and will quickly result in pounds lost and fitness goals achieved.

Once your goal weight is met and your activity level is where it should be, your target calorie range will be adjusted for maintenance. Sounds good, right?

Time for a Summer Shape-up

It’s that time of year again! No more excuses and no more halfway doing it. You’ve got to go all out to look and feel your best, just in time for Summer. But before you set up shop in the corner doing 3.7 million sit-ups, you should know that as helpful as it is to have a strong core for overall health, there are much more effective ways to get the results that you crave.

What you need is a full-body exercise routine that really gets your heart pumping. That means on top of a solid foundation of strength-training exercises, you’ll want to pile on plenty of high intensity cardio exercises to really jump-start your metabolism. Try a class that takes you out of your comfort zone or sit down with one of our health & fitness specialists for a complimentary consultation. We’d be happy to help you develop a routine that makes the most sense for you and your schedule.

Food journaling is a critical component to weight management. Documenting what you eat throughout the day makes you more accountable for the choices you make. The simple action of tracking your food intake is a constant reminder that you are choosing to pay attention to your health and well-being. In time, you’ll start to understand where your calories are coming from and the nutritional balance of your meals and snacks. This knowledge will make it easier to make the necessary changes to your diet and lifestyle. Then, if your stomach is upset, you feel unusually tired or sluggish, bloated, unsatisfied, etc., you can look back and see which foods made you feel this way.

Shed the Weight, Mentally

As we dive into the second half of the Weight Loss Challenge, it’s vital to note that while many of our members are striving to get rid of extra pounds, there’s also extra baggage that we all carry around with us, weighing us down mentally. From the death of a loved one to childhood traumas, from low self esteem to having little work-life balance, this extra weight inhibits us from really succeeding at whatever goals we’ve set for ourselves.

I have had many people come to me and say, “I just don’t understand why I can’t accomplish my goal.” People think that they’re doing everything in their power to change, but often something is blocking the person mentally from reaching whatever it is they’re working toward.

Many times, knowledge is really where the power lies. Those who track food in MyFitnessPal are successful in losing weight, simply because they know what they are putting into their bodies. They begin to see patterns in their eating, such as too little protein at breakfast, snacking on the wrong foods, not being able to gauge portion size, etc. And when they realize what the problem is, they can begin to make small tweaks and changes to lead them in the right direction.

My challenge for you this week is to think about what extra weight you carry around with you every day and identify ways you can ultimately shed that extra weight. This can seem daunting at first, but tackle it little by little. You are not going to shed everything in one day, so go in with realistic expectations. Whatever your struggle though, you can overcome it once you acknowledge what it is and take the necessary steps to let it go.  And though it is much easier said than done, when you take control of it, it can no longer take control of you.
